Frequently asked questions
How does permanent hair removal work?
IPL uses light to reduce hair growth. Light from the ProWave hand piece travels harmlessly through the skin until it hits the hair follicle, where most of the melanin (or color) is. The light is converted into heat energy, which destroys the follicle and most of the hair shaft. The dead hair is then pushed to the surface of the skin and eventually falls out after 1-3 weeks.
What can I expect during my appointment?
During your appointment, you will be lying down comfortably as we apply a thin layer of conductive lotion in the areas you want treated. When the treatment begins, you will see flashes of light. Most patients say they occasionally feel a mild snapping sensation, especially in extremely sensitive sections or over a bony area. After we are done, you will have an opportunity to wipe away any excess lotion and apply a rich, soothing moisturizer or calming hydrocortisone cream. The procedure time will depend on the size of the removal area.
What kind of results can I expect?
Results may vary, depending on what areas we are treating and how many sessions you have already completed. In the first few sessions, hairs usually take 3-4 weeks before starting a new growth cycle. The more treatments you have already had, the longer the time between sessions will be.
It is important to come in every 4-8 weeks, depending on the area being treated. This will ensure the most effective, long-lasting results. Patients need at least 6-8 treatments to see a significant reduction in hair. Once-a-year touch-ups are necessary for maintenance.
